“Coal Mining’s Heyday”: Sun.  2:30-4:30pm, $20 - *Fox Theater, WAL

Traditionally we have a special theme for our Scottish concert.  This year it’s a comparison of coal mining in Southern Colorado (our cultural heritage) and Scotland from the late 1800’s up to the 1950’s.  This concert celebrates the miners, their families and their lives through song, music, dance and stories. Hosting the afternoon are solo artists Scottish singer Ed Miller and American singer Jennie McAvoy.  Other performers include Scottish singers Patsy Seddon of “Poozie” fame and Alison Bell who will be leading “The Girls’ Night Out”, Kim McKee and Ken Willson, some borrowed Ceilidh Peppers for an instrumental accent, and a few local surprises.  This is a unique concert not to be missed!

SATURDAY
All Harps Go Latin: Alfredo Rolando Ortiz, 9:00-11:00am - La Plaza Inn, WAL
For harp players new to Latin rhythms or those wanting to refine their fingering and style techniques and learn more performance “tricks”.  From conga to cha-cha-cha to the music and musical styles of Brazil, Paraguay, Mexico and more.  Learn new music and accompaniment patterns for many kinds of music.  Learn unique SPECIAL EFFECTS to make your repertoire more contrasting and fun for audiences.

Irish Fiddle 1: Liz Carroll,9:30-11:30am - Methodist Church, LV
Level: intermediate.  The class will mainly focus on good techniques for playing ornaments and for bowing.  We’ll separate out where to use them, and then put them into tunes we know.  We’ll strive to learn a couple of new tunes as well!  Class will move at the speed of the participants’ abilities.

Irish Flute 1: Shannon Heaton, 9:30-11:30am - 1899 Inn, LV
For students of the flute who wish to learn Irish styling or for those already playing “Irish” who want to hone their techniques.  Emphasis will be on traditional style and learning by ear.  All participants should be able to play D and G Major scales with a steady tone.  We will work on cultivating a strong, rhythmic approach to the Irish flute while also learning new tunes.

Guitar Accompaniment 1: Matt Heaton,  9:30-11:30am - Parkside Gallery, LV
Level: Players should be able to play with a steady rhythm and change chords without interruption.  This workshop focuses on backing Irish traditional tunes with special emphasis on learning to tap into the rhythm of a tune (instead of using a “default” rhythm from another type of music). We will work on when and how to change cords pleasingly, and explore resonant chord voicings with a focus on desired sound regardless of tuning (DADGAD, standard, and dropped D)

Uilleann Pipes: Jerry O’Sullivan, 9:30-11:30am - Methodist Parsonage, LV
