Setting Poems to Music
This session will explore approaches to pairing poems with Scottish tunes. Among the examples examined will be “My Love is Like A Red, Red Rose” by Robert Burns, which he originally set to “Major Graham of Inchbrakie,” but which a subsequent editor replaced with an old Scottish tune, “Low Down in the Broom.” The effect of the tune on the mood of the song and its accessibility to singers will be considered. In other examples, we will look at different settings of the same poems by Emily Brontë and Sir Walter Scott.

Accompanying Voice with Harp
This session will primarily address approaches to accompanying oneself on harp while singing. As singers we will consider song selection, vocal range, phrasing, and breathing. As harp players, we will consider the use of the harp to enhance the song though chords, harmonies, intros, outros, and interludes. |

Accessing Old Scottish Tunes and Words
There are thousands of Scottish tunes and poems for those who wish to build a Scottish song library, many available at no cost. I will give you an overview of the library I have built and am building, identifying those resources that are “must-haves,” and where to get them. I will also discuss strategies for finding resources without going to Scotland and will give you a list of some key website links to free historical Scottish music and poetry resources. |
